42mph cycling down Battery Hill, Fairlight, East Sussex

I've been busy training for the London to Brighton bike ride that I'm doing in Sept, and yesterday I rode along the coats from Rye to Pett Level (about 9 miles) and from there through Fairlight and up Battery Hill to the coastguard station in Hastings Country Park. The main bit of the hill took me about 13 mins to cycle up - it's a similar size to to the Ditchling Beacon hill on the London-Brighton ride, which is why I'm training on it.

Of course the really fun bit is riding back down it at high speed, which is what this video is all about. I've filmed is using a GoPro camera attached to the forks. Enjoy:

and if you liked that, here's another video of different parts of the route, including other camera angles and some cygnets!

I also have a whole load of pictures from the wood from the past two weeks, hoping to catch up and blog them soon....

I sincerely hope that
1. You have disc brakes on the bike
2. You wear a helmet.

Just a quick thought; if you were pedaling at the speed you were (30+?)what gear are you pulling?

Hi Peter - yes to both! :-)

I can pedal up to about 35mph on this bike. Not sure what the gear ratio is, I've not checked...

Maybe 42 kph nothing like 42 mph! I hit 46.7mph recorded as top speed two weeks ago and was far far quicker than that!

@Adam Actually, I got 42.3mph - my speedo is carefully calibrated and stores the max speed for you to check later on. I'll try to beat your 46mph next time! ;-)

He runs a higher gear and a tuned speedo Mike!

Yeah, but if I can get a fast start, I'll do better - and I did actually brake at a couple of points that time... My speedo is calibrated too (I measured the distance to roll one revolution while sitting on the bike), so it's accurate.

What is the speed limit down that hill? I'm sure I don't usually go much more than 35mph in the car on the way back from a trip to B & Q!!!

OK then, so who will be the first cyclist in history to achieve Red Shift?

Speed limit's 60mph down there - I won't be breaking that one any time soon... ;-)
