At last, a clearing!

Well, today the hard work (some of it contributed by visitors) paid off. Here's a section of the ride before work began:

There was a resulting pile of logs, which as they're only birch, will probably be used for firewood next year, once they've had a chance to dry out:

The benefit of the clearing will become apparent over the next year or two, as the range of small oak and chestnut trees there will be able to grow up. Here's one of the baby ones that now has a better chance:
